Maslenitsa: Russian Pancake Week

Maslenitsa  (Pancake Week) is a Russian holiday that has been celebrated since pagan times. The holiday is celebrated during the week before Lent.
My friend from Germany has visited Maslenitsa holiday. He got interested old Russian traditions and   even started  learning  Russian online! He says: I love this happy folk   holiday as it is funny and ruddy pancakes look like the sun!

The custom of celebrating Maslenitsa dates back to the Bacchanalia, the mystic Greek festival wine God Bacchus. But this is not an exact copy of the Bacchanalia. It was believed that those who refuse to celebrate it, will live "in a bitter misfortune”—a superstition that kept Russians celebrating the festival into modern times.
In the 18th century, Maslenitsa included live bear shows in every Russian town.  Trained bears danced and bowed to amuse the public.
Maslenitsa remains a very popular holiday. Pancake Week is celebrated in every school, where children perform a special holiday play. To commemorate the holiday in the workplalce, staff order blini for lunch.
Maslenitsa week
Maslenitsa begins on Monday. This day is  called “Vstrecha(Opening day). On this day people bake blini (pancakes), build snow-covered slopes where children and adults can ride down on sleds. They  make straw scarecrows and dress them in old women’s clothing  It  is symbol of winter itself aging, soon to pass away.
Tuesday Zaigryshi” (Game day). Children and adults build igloos, and skomorokhs (jesters) sing chastushkee (short funny songs) dressed as clowns.
Wednesday - "Lakomka" (Gourmand day).  Traditionally, the husband’s Mother-in-law invites the family over for a Pancake party. Visitors are served delicious honey gingerbreads, nuts and baked pancakes with jam, honey, caviar, sour cream, and fish.  They down warm mugs of sbiteni, the traditional drink of  Maslenitsa, a healing tincture made with honey and spices. Sbiteni  can be alcoholic (with the addition of hops) or non-alcoholic. Sbiteni  is an ancient drink--older than tea or coffee! It is believed to have healing properties and defend against colds, so people drink it in winter.
Thursday - "Razgul" (The  funniest  day). The whole village participates in all kinds of activities: sleight riding, puppet show, singing kolyada-songs. Skomorokhs amuse the audience with improvised concerts.
Friday
- "Teschiny Vecherki” (Mother-in-law’s party). This time the husband hosts his mother–in-law and close relatives  for a Pancake party.  But the evening before, the mother–in-law had to send him ladles, pans and other things for pancakes making. Fathers-in-law sent some butter and a bag of buckwheat.  It is very disrespectful if the husband breaks this tradition of hosting the Pancake party.  It is considered a grave insult to his wife’s family.
Saturday –  “Zolovkiny posidelki” – (Sister-in-law’s party). A young wife gives special gifts to her sister(s)-in-law. Most often these are needlework items, such as embroidered towels and table cloths, or crocheted shawls.  If her husband doesn’t have any sisters, she gives gifts to other female family members or neighbors. On this day, the straw scarecrows are burned. Ashes are dispersed on the field to make soil fertile and offer blessings for a good harvest.
Sunday –“Proschenoye  Voskresenye” is "Forgiveness Sunday" or “Bidding Farewell  to Winter”. People ask each other for forgiveness for any trespasses or wrongdoings they committed that year.
People light bonfires on the icy hills. The melting ice symbolizes that winter is over, and so the world is purified of evil. The holiday comes to a close, a solemn, hopeful end to a festive week

Moscow Impressions

First impression
Moscow impressions start  to form a long  before departure, based on feedback and advice of friends and relatives.
But actually you will get your own  first impression when you have the opportunity to see the Russian words through the eyes of a stranger – they are rather long and consist of bizarre characters of Cyrillic alphabet. Who believes himself capable of traveling independently, he should learn Russian  online to be ready   for a reopening of the alphabet  at the Moscow airport. Time spent in queues in front of passport control, just perfect for this.

Architecture
Moscow architecture is very rich! From the Kremlin and Luxuriously mansions of 18-19 centuries to Stalin's constructivism and modern skyscrapers.
Be sure to visit Moscow Izmailovo Park. It is unique, and  the largest park in Europe, located in the city. Also advise when you to get to  the metro station "Izmailovo  Park" exit  and walk around the island, where  the Silver-Grape ponds located just on the island of Virgin Cathedral  itself. This is unusual  and  lovely   place, especially in summer.

Streets
Amazing for a resident of any small town is also the size of Moscow - for example, the street with 8 rows of cars! First, on such streets you should not travel alone as a very fast as you need to be  used  to rapidly opening up new bands.
People
Yet apart from the historical monuments and architectural ensembles there are much  more beautiful,  can be seen in Moscow. First, very elegantly dressed ( especially women) Russians.  As a rule they follow the latest fashion  and often prefer high heeled shoes.
You also may view  miscellaneous  public here . In the center of the supermarket you can meet people not only from Siberia and the Caucasus, but also "comrades" from  the fraternal countries such as Vietnam, Sudan and Cuba.

 Restaurants
You will get a lot of  fun, visiting fun, visiting restaurants in Moscow. Almost  every country of   UN  represents here! To the list of these countries can add all the former  soviet republics. So, you have a good chance to try Byelorussian draniki, Armenian basturma or  Georgian satsivi. And you discover everywhere a 24-hour restaurants , cafes and supermarkets are working around the clock, as well as offering orders for home delivery "online".
Markets
Be sure to visit a typical Moscow market, it is better to do it alone, to really understand how well can look  vegetables as they can be fresh and tasty!

Moscow chocolate

You can find here  a few Russian producers of chocolates, whose  products  seem relatively cheap, truly worth a try. Especially from Chocolate factory "Krasny Oktyabr" which comes from the Russian Empire time!

Goods/prices
In fact, here you can find  everything you want to buy. I have never seen so many commercials expensive brands, like in Moscow, but here everything  is at least as expensive as in London or Milan.
-
Sure, to feel and love Moscow, you must be born here, live and see it fully , in winter and summer , both day and night, on weekdays and weekends…
Anyway, come again, walk around the city on weekends, when the capital  calms down from the crazy everyday life and  you'll get an unforgettable  impressions.

                                                          WELCOME  TO MOSCOW !

Russian for beginners

Do you want to study Russian? I will give you some advice to start...

Reading Russian slowly
    • If you read Russian words slowly you will learn  pronunciation of letters fast.
Russian words, unlike many English ones are comprehensible when read syllabol by syllabol. Read  до свидания slowly  as : do -svee-da-nee-ya and a Russian will understand that you mean: 'good bye'.
Indeed, if all you need is a 'survial' pronunciation of Russian , it is sufficient to know the values of letters.

    • When you read join the letters into syllabols, e.g.  - Мос-ква ( Mos-kva).
If a word contains a large or awkward group of consonants, the group can be split so that some consonants go with the preceding vowel and some with the following:  хо-ро-шо ( ho-ro-sho)  - good, су-ве-нир (su-ve-nir ) -souvenir.
Here is an exercise to check the knowledge of some simple words:
     пиво ( pi-vo) - beer
    кофе  (ko-fye) - coffee
    Нью-Йорк (nyyoo-york)- New York
    почта ( poch-ta)- post office
    спасибо ( spa-see-ba - unstressed o is a )- thank you.
That's all for today.Next time I shall introduce you to the 33 of the Russian alphabet in four steps .Once you know their English equivalents, reading Russian words is easy.
Did you like my introduction into Russian? Please, write comment.
